Co-organized by UNESCO Beijing Cluster Office and APCEIU, the Virtual Consultation for East Asian Countries on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) was held on 17 June 2021. The meeting was attended by representatives from Japan, Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, UNESCO, and APCEIU.
Over the meeting, participants had the opportunity to review the status quo of GCED implementation in each participating country, including their GCED initiatives, achievements and best practices. The representatives from participating countries also shared the opportunities and challenges they faced and their respective future plans to enhance further and solidify GCED implementation. Moreover, through the presentations from APCEIU, UNESCO Bangkok Office and UNESCO Institute for Statistics, the participants also learned more about GCED-related programmes and monitoring efforts on Sustainable Development Goals Target 4.7, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
Before the conclusion of the meeting, the participants engaged in a discussion on possible collaboration(s) on GCED, led by the moderator, Mr Robert Parua from UNESCO Beijing Office. Over the discussion, it was also found that the technical issue regarding the implementation, monitoring and assessment of GCED and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is the concern of most participating countries. Collective efforts to ensure progress in this area are deemed critical by the participants.
