On Tuesday, 31 August 2021, APCEIU and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat have co-organized the Virtual Consultation Meeting on Global Citizenship Education for Southeast Asian Countries. The meeting gathered more than 50 participants, which consisted of representatives from 9 Southeast Asian countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam), universities, SEAMEO Regional Centres and Secretariat, and APCEIU.

Over the meeting, the representatives from participating SEAMEO Member States had the opportunity to share and gain information regarding the latest update of GCED implementation in each country and identified the challenges and opportunities faced on the ground. Action plans on GCED implementation from each country were also presented. During the presentations, there is a general need among Southeast Asian countries in regards to enhancing the availability and consistency of quality GCED training programmes targeting teachers, teacher trainers and school administrators. There is also a common interest among the countries to ensure teachers and students are equipped with good educational materials on GCED.

Following the series of presentations, all participants engaged in a discussion regarding the possible areas of cooperation on GCED among Southeast Asian countries, SEAMEO and APCEIU. The discussion was focusing on four main areas, including research and curriculum development, teacher training, material development and efforts to further enhance cooperation among the stakeholders.
