On Friday, 29 October 2021, the Third Annual Meeting of the GCED Actors' Platform has been successfully implemented. Co-organized by UNESCO and APCEIU, the meeting gathered GCED stakeholders from five regions, including Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America, Latin America and the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa, to update and share the GCED initiatives and future plans.

Ms Cecilia Barbieri, Chief of the Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education at UNESCO, opened the meeting by reminding the participants about UNESCO's missions, including the promotion of the culture of peace in the minds of men and women through education. The consequences of the COVID-19 on the education sector are unprecedented. However, she underlined that the pandemic has further highlighted the importance of GCED to guard the implementation of UNESCO principles and approaches to promote peace. Therefore, the growth of the GCED Network is a huge encouragement to ensure the continuation of the promotion of peace in various regions.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Hyun Mook Lim, Director of APCEIU, highlighted the importance of collective actions in changing the current challenges into opportunities. Particularly, measures should be taken to mainstream and strengthen GCED in education not only for students but also for adults during this crisis and in the post-pandemic years. The roles of the Regional Networks and this Global Platform are also critical in that process.

During the meeting, the participants learned about the direction of GCED, especially under the upcoming UNESCO's Medium-Term Strategy for 2022-2029 (41 C/4) and UNESCO's Programme and Budget for 2022-2025 (41 C/5) through a presentation given by Ms Barbieri, followed by a presentation on APCEIU's programme and activities from Mr Jay Jaehong Kim, Head of the Office of External Relations and Information at APCEIU. Moreover, the participants also received information regarding the latest GCED initiatives by the regional coordinators and representative members of five regional networks. They also engaged in the discussion session led by Ms Lydia Ruprecht, Team Leader and Programme Specialist at the Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education at UNESCO.
